Buchanan County Recreation Park and Fairgrounds
As the flagship of the county park system, this facility is usually referred to as Poplar Gap Park. From US 460 (Riverside Drive), the park is reached via Poplar Creek Road, Hoot Owl Road, and Little Prater Road. From Route 83 (Lovers Gap Road), the park is reached via Poplar Creek Road.
Phase 1 - The park presently offers a fairgrounds and horse ring, two baseball fields, a football field, three large picnic shelters with grills and a large smoker, a sandlot playground area with a caboose, a paved walker's path, a snack bar, three separate restroom facilities, a paved parking area for more than 500 vehicles, a large paved exhibit area, an outdoor stage and a park office and maintenance shed.
Planned facilities for Phase 1 include a soccer field; support facilities for the Little League program; a tennis court; three more picnic shelters; a water park with wading pool; a primitive campground site; six miles of bike or hike trails; an outdoor skate park; a BMX (bike) track; outdoor paintball court; a fun center with food court, batting cages and arcade; and an amphitheater with a large stage house and seating for as many as 5,000 persons. When completed, Phase 1 will cover 290 acres on a former surface mine site, at an estimated cost of $2,225,000.
Phase 2 - This proposed future development on what is now an active surface mine site will add another 370 acres to the park grounds. Planned facilities include a nine-hole public gold course with a clubhouse; rental cottages; a recreational center with a swimming pool and 354 parking spaces serving the center area and the proposed amphitheater; and additional bike or hike trails. Projected cost of Phase 2 is $3 million.
